The Laboratory was set up in 1989 specifically for the calibration of radiation measuring instruments used in diagnostic radiology and is the only purpose-built facility of its kind in the UK. We have recently broadened its range of services to include x-ray transmission measurements for manufacturers of radiation protection materials such as lead, lead-backed plasterboard and lead rubber. JPL can also carry out radio-opacity testing for manufacturers of such items as endo-tracheal tubes, catheters and other tubing used in diagnostic radiological procedures. JPL continues to provide a one-stop shop for calibration, maintenance and repair services for dosemeters and kVp dividers (non-invasive and invasive), used in diagnostic radiology. Recently JPL has also added Densitometers and Sensitometers to the range of equipment that it can calibrate

RPC has now moved to new premises and in the process JPL has quadrupled its capacity. Instead of one lab we now have two labs for calibrating dose measuring equipment and two for calibrating kVp meters. Calibrations commenced in two of the labs in February 2004 and once the remainder are up and running we hope to significantly improve our turn round times.

The Laboratory is the recognised Europe calibration and repair facility for both Radcal and Cardinal Health (formerly Keithley RMD and later Inovision). In addition JPL is the Europe calibration agent for Unfors and Gammex RMI and the UK calibration and repair agent for PTW.

Summary

The Advantages of a JPL dosemeter calibration

David Arnold and Mehboob RathodRadiographic calibration plus a full electrical calibration on all Radcal and Cardinal Health (Keithley) dosemeters. Because of the large dynamic range of modern dosemeters used in diagnostic radiology, it is prohibitively expensive to carry out a full test of the range radiographically. Due to JPL's status as recognized Europe calibration agents for Radcal and Cardinal Health, we are able to calibrate to factory standards.

Should your Radcal or Keithley instrument be out of specification, we can also adjust it back into specification. As JPL is also the approved calibration agent for Gammex RMI, we can also adjust Gammex instruments (again following factory procedures).

If your instrument is in need of repair, we can also repair as we are Europe repair agent for Radcal and Cardinal Health. This gives you a one-stop service for repair and calibration.

JPL's repair and calibration services are certificated to ISO9001 (2000).

The advantages of a JPL kV meter calibration

Keithley (Cardinal Health) dividers and Radcal kV meters are electrically tested and calibrated using factory procedures. In addition we have the ability to adjust and repair the instruments if necessary. Unfors kV meters are calibrated and adjusted using factory procedures

Gammex kV meters can also be adjusted if necessary. This includes the very popular RMI 232 mammographic kV meter.

The high voltage laboratory

Picture: Calibrating a Dynalyzer This laboratory is a relatively new development and is for the calibration of invasive kV dividers, including the Radcal dynalyzer. Again, because of our relationship with Radcal, a repair facility is also offered and of course adjustment where necessary.

It is also possible to calibrate other types of divider. Contact us if you have any questions.
